THE Philippines got off to a strong start in the Baseball Federation of Asia U18 Asian Baseball Championship, picking up wins in its first two games in Taipei.
The team called Archers blanked Sri Lanka, 10-0, in five innings, and defeated Hong Kong, 4-2, to open Group B play.
The Philippines will look to sweep group play against Japan on Wednesday night.
Valeros takes PH win
Laurence Valeros was the winning pitcher in the match against Sri Lanka as he struck out seven batters and yielded two hits in three and one-third innings.
The Philippines scored two runs in the sixth inning against Hong Kong to break a 2-2 tie with Brandon Sanchez and Rinaldo Kyle Matti reaching home on a two-out catching error in the outfield. Sanchez reached first base on a single, and advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch on Matti.
Aron Jesse Manguiat struck out four in a five-inning relief appearance to preserve the Philippines’ lead.
