UAAP baseball and softball tournament openers moved to give way for Pope Francis visit
The openers of both the UAAP baseball and softball tournaments had to be moved at a later date to give way to the visit of Pope Francis.

THE UAAP has moved the opening of both the baseball and softball competitions of Season 77 this weekend to January 24 as the Rizal Memorial baseball field won’t be available owing to the five-day visit of Pope Francis.

In a memorandum sent by event host University of Santo Tomas, the league was forced to move the two tournaments after being advised by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) that the entire Rizal Memorial Sports Complex will be used by the Philippine National Police as detachment post from January 10 to 20 for the Papal visit.

Pope Francis will be in the country from January 15 to 19.

“To give ample time to clean and prepare the entire sports complex, our UAAP baseball and softball tournaments will be moved to January 24, 2015,” according to the memo.

The softball tournament will now be held January 24, while the baseball competition will open the next day.

The collegiate league earlier decided the volleyball and juniors basketball tournaments will stop play during the Pope's visit.
