THE Metro Schools League Baseball and Softball Tournament unfurls its 22nd season this Sunday at the Sto. Nino baseball field in Marikina.

Philippine Tot Baseball president Rodolfo Tingzon Jr. said he expects 80 teams from 25 schools who will compete in various divisions—the Shetland (3-6 years old tee ball), pinto (7-8 years old coached pitched) mustang (9-10 years old), bronco (11-12 years old), pony (13-14 years old), and colt (15-18 years old).

Elementary girls softball (9-13 years old) and high school girls softball (14-18 years old) are also included in the tournament.

Among the schools set to compete are Ateneo, La Salle, International School of Manila, Paref Southridge School, La Salle College Antipolo, La Salle Lipa, La Salle Canlubang, and other teams from Antipolo, Muntinlupa, Tanauan, Marikina, Cainta, Pasig, and Quezon City.

“This is part of the regular season ng baseball and softball here in the country,” said Tingzon in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum. “My father started this and we are just continuing this tradition.”

Tingzon, whose father Rodolfo Sr. is considered the father of youth baseball in the Philippines, also said HMR Trading Haus and Loro Sports will be supporting this year’s tournament.

Ada Milby, brand manager of Overlanders Logistics and Distribution, which carries the name of HMR in the Philippines, said supporting the tournament came naturally since they have been selling sporting goods

“A lot of times, these sporting goods are for sports that are not well-known like baseball. We want to show that HMR supports local sports,” said Milby, who is also a member of the Philippine Lady Volcanoes.

Aside from Marikina, games will also be held in Marist, Ateneo, Alabang Country Club, among others.
