La Salle, Ateneo batters clobber separate foes to keep unbeaten slate in UAAP baseball

THE De La Salle Green Batters continued their winning ways as they clobbered the University of Santo Tomas Golden Sox, 11-4, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 79 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

The Green Batters trailed the Golden Sox, 2-4, after the fourth but managed to come back in the fifth with three straight runs courtesy of Paul Nagit, Franco Hashimoto, and Paolo Salud.

La Salle also capitalized on a lethargic UST pitching in the sixth inning to add three more runs for an 8-4 lead. An RBI triple by Iggy Escaño secured the win for the Batters as they ended the match 11-4.

Escaño also had a home run in the fourth to go along with three RBIs.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, one game at a time. Hindi naman puwedeng laging nasa atin yung momentum. May mga time din na mauunahan tayo. Ang importante ay kung paano sila mag-adjust sa ganung pangyayari,” La Salle head coach Joseph Orillana said.

“Mas maganda yung maranasan namin ito dahil may mga games [deep into the season] na magagamit namin yan,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo Blue Eagles frustrated the National University Bulldogs, 10-1, to grab their second straight win.

Christopher Hilario broke a two-inning stalemate as he opened Ateneo’s batting with a solo home run, while Javi Macasaet added an RBI double.

NU’s Cyruz Barit placed the Bulldogs on the board in the fourth as he reached home following a catching error, but Ateneo quickly recovered with two runs in the same inning.

Ateneo pulled away further in the seventh inning as they scored three more runs led by Marco Mallari and Macasaet.

The Macasaet brothers led the Blue Eagles with older brother Paolo striking out seven batters, and Javi doing it on offense after going four-for-five and collecting three RBIs.

Earlier, the Adamson Soaring Falcons grabbed their first win at the expense of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 9-5.

Standings: DLSU 2-0, Ateneo 2-0, NU 1-1, AdU 1-1, UST 0-2, UP 0-2.
