GUAM overpowered host the Philippines, 8-1, to clinch the remaining finals ticket in the 2016 Asia Pacific Senior League Baseball Tournament at Clark International Sports Complex on Friday at The Villages in Clark, Pampanga.
The Guam batters unloaded seven runs in the last two innings to set the tone for their third victory in four outings and earn the right to face Australia (4-0) in the title match.
The Philippines, represented by ILLAM, finished the elims with one win and three losses, behind dethroned champions Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, which wound up with a 2-2 card following a 23-1 demolition of hapless Indonesia (0-4) in the other game.
ILLAM tries to end the tourney on a broght note when it takes on CNMI for third spot.
“We’ll do our best to win this last match,” said ILLAM coach Egay de los Reyes.
The game was tied at 1-1 through five innings before the Guamanians made their big move and wrested control for good.
Cole Cabrera put Guam ahead with a run-scoring sacrifice bunt then Calvin Aguon followed it up with an RBI double in the sixth. The Guamanians made a five-run explosion in the seventh capped by Aguon’s two-run double to put the game beyond reach and complete their march into the final against the Aussies.
Meanwhile, Japan outdueled holder Korea, 6-2, in a non-bearing elims duel that served as a preview of their duel for the Intermediate League title.
Hong Kong prevailed over Philippine representative Sarangani, 6-3, in a similar ranking match ahead of their bronze medal tussle.
The Sarangani clouters fought their opponents on even terms for most part before losing steam.
Hong Kong scored three runs off walks issued by Sarangani in successive bases-loaded situations in the sixth to restore the lead.
