Rizal Technological University proved once again that it can compete with the big guns of college baseball as it grabbed the bronze medal in the PSC-POC National Games competition via a 10-5 victory over University of Santo Tomas Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Christian Maghanoy had run-scoring hits in a seven-run pullaway in the fifth and sixth inning for the Blue Thunders, a many-time champion in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association, in defeating the 2010 UAAP champion Tigers.
Maghanoy powered RTU’s four-run assault in the fifth with a single to score Ferdinand Liguayan before reaching home plate on a series of errors by UST.
After a one-out single by Joey Gucao, Boy Redicio doubled home Gucao before advancing home when Roque Sillabe reached first base on a catching error in the outfield. Maghanoy pushed Sillabe home on a double for an 8-2 RTU lead.
UST trimmed its deficit to four but RTU answered with two more runs to go further ahead in the contest.
As of posting time, the Philippine national team was battling the Philippine youth team for the PNG baseball crown. The Philippine team needed an extra inning and a Jonash Ponce solo home run to beat its youth counterparts, 3-2, in 10 innings during their face-off in the eliminations.
