ATENEO moved closer in completing a first-round sweep in UAAP Season 75 baseball with a 11-3 drubbing of University of Santo Tomas on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
After trailing by two runs early, the Blue Eagles took a 3-2 lead after a Bocc Bernardo sent Leandro Banzon and Matt Laurel home home with a hit and Migi Santos connected on a double to send Dio Remollo home.
With bases loaded, Matt Laurel blasted a grounder, while the Growling Tigers committed a catching error, sending Kevin Ramos and Bernardo to home base to pad Ateneo’s lead to three.
Bernardo's double then paved the way for Banzon and Laurel to score as the Blue Eagles pulled away for good at 7–2.
Ateneo, which will face reigning champion National University in a rematch of last year’s finals on Sunday, notched its fourth straight victory.
The Blue Eagles also swept the first-round last season, only to flounder in the second round and lose to the Bulldogs in the best-of-three championship series which went the full route.
NU defeated La Salle, 17-7, to maintain its hold of second place with a 3-1 record.
The Tigers dropped to 2-2, while the Green Archers dropped to 1-3 slate.
