UAAP champion Ateneo avoided the upset ax by pulling off a 14-11 win over De La Salle-Zobel on Sunday at the resumption of the PSC Chairman’s Baseball Classic at the Rizal Memorial ballpark.
The Blue Eagles recovered from a deficit by tallying five runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-9 lead. They collected four insurance runs in the seventh and final frame.
Ateneo joined the winners’ bracket of the 14-team double elimination tournament.
De La Salle-Zobel, which is competing in the UAAP juniors division, took a 9-5 lead after the fourth inning, backed by four runs each in the first and second innings.
Ram Casey Alipio pushed home the winning run at the top of the seventh inning, while pitcher Ernesto Binarao preserved the victory with a defensive play to lift Philippine Navy past Throwback, 8-7.
Alipio’s double brought Ramil Empasis home to break a 7-7 tie. Binarao also made a flyout off a squeeze attempt at the bottom of the seventh to protect his complete game outing.
University of the Philippines thumped Bulacan Agricultural State University, 12-1, while UAAP runner-up National University beat Titans, 11-1, on Saturday.
