    Sarah Barredo, Malvinne Alcala set up semifinal showdown in FDG Cup badminton

    Malvinne Alcala stays on track for another title after winning two in the Philippine National Games.

    TOP seed Sarah Barredo and fancied Malvinne Alcala knocked off their rivals in emphatic fashion on Saturday to arrange a semifinal showdown in the women’s Open singles the FDG Cup 2015 Open and Invitational Badminton Championships at Powersmash in Makati City.

    Barredo, who drew an opening round bye and whipped Joanne Alvarez, 21-10, 21-12, in the second round, overpowered Aldreen Conception, 21-9, 21-17.

    Alcala advanced with a 21-12, 21-6 romp over Marinel Diansay, pressing her bid for another crown after nailing two titles in the recently-concluded Philippine National Games.

    The semifinals and finals are set on Sunday at Robinsons Place Ermita. The event will be highlighted by the exhibition game between former Olympic, world and Asian Games champion and six-time Indonesia Open winner Taufik Hidayat and Robinsons Land Corp. Frederick D. Go against London Olympics silver medalist and former German Open winner Mizuki Fujii and former Olympian Kennevic Asuncion at 3 p.m.

    Also on tap are the semis and finals matches in Classes A to F of the Invitational division featuring employees and business partners of RLC. The awards rites will be held at Century Park Hotel at 7 p.m.

    No. 3 Airah Albo downed Janel Dihiansan, 21-14, 21-18, to also advance to the semifinals of the tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Badminton Association.

    Malaysia’s Krishnan Yogendran and local ace Gelita Castilo scored a walkover win over the top seeded John Pantig and Thea Pomar to reach the semifinals of the Open mixed doubles against third seeds Christian Bernardo and Joella de Vera, who held off Mike Minuluan and Aprille Bibiano, 22-22, 21-14.

    Second seed Alvin Morada and Alyssa Leonardo blasted Lee Sabanal and Steffi Aquino, 21-12, 21-18, in to seal a semifinal clash with Peter Magnaye and Jessie Francisco, who upended Paul Vivas and Eleanor Inlayo, 11-21, 21-18, 21-12.
