THE Philippines put itself in contention for a quarterfinal berth by beating Singapore, 3-2, on Wednesday night in the 2020 Smart Badminton Asia Manila Team Championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Solomon Padiz beat Wing Darrion Ng, 21-10, 21-19, to clinch the victory in the tie as the Philippines ended the preliminaries with a 1-1 win-loss slate.

The Philippines can advance outright to the knockout quarterfinals with a win by Chinese Taipei over Singapore.

"Na-feel ko na ibigay ko lang ‘yung best ko. Nothing to lose naman po eh, pero mas okay naman na manalo po kami. Naka-adjust po ‘yung kalaban sa game ko, and ‘yun nga, nadulas po ako kanina. Sumasakit po 'yung [waist ko]. Pero part of the game naman po,” said Padiz, a product of National University.

The Filipino shuttlers made it a 2-2 tie after Joper Escueta and Paul Pantig beat Abel Tan and Jia Howin Wong, 21-16, 21-16.
