UP, FEU shuttlers unbeaten in two outings in UAAP women's badminton

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines and Far Eastern University overwhelmed their respective foes on Sunday to gain a share of the early lead in UAAP Season 77 women’s badminton tournament.

The Lady Maroons tripped Adamson University, 4-1, while the Lady Tamaraws shut out National University, 5-0, for a 2-0 slate after the second day of action at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

Paola Bernardo, Mary Ann Maranon and Jessie Francisco won their single matches for the Lady Maroons, while Maria Elisha Ongcuangco and Francisco topped their first doubles assignment.

Adamson University averted a shutout when Christine Garin and Geilyn Ochoa emerged victorious in the second doubles match.

Two-time defending champion Ateneo bested University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, to bounce back from a stunning opening day loss to UP, while last season’s runner-up De La Salle waylaid University of the East, 4-1.

The Lady Eagles and the Lady Archers moved to 1-1 alongside the Tigresses and the Lady Warriors, while the Lady Falcons and the Lady Bulldogs remained winless in two outings.

Dia Magno and Janel Adrianne Dihiansan provided the clincher for Ateneo, winning the second doubles match to make up for the losses suffered by Bianca Carlos and Jana de Vera in the first doubles and De Vera in the third singles.

Carlos, the reigning MVP, and Patrisha Malibiran took the first two singles matches for the Lady Eagles.

Except for the loss by Danica San Ignacio in the opening singles, the Lady Archers were dominating with Monica Rivera and Janine Peligrino winning the next two singles matches and the pairs of Alyssa Leonardo and Aires Amor Montilla, and Kristelle Salatan and San Ignacio emerging victorious in doubles play.
