    Philippine youth team members ease into quarterfinals of National Juniors Badminton Tournament

    NATIONAL team members Ros Leenard Pedrosa, Alexis Geverjuan and Frell Keeyan Gabuelo advanced to boys’ 19-under singles quarterfinals of the 1st Sun Cellular-Ming Ramos National Juniors Badminton Tournament Luzon Leg over the weekend at Powersmash Badminton Center in Makati City.

    Pedrosa beat Kevin Ian Marcus Fabros, 21-11, 21-6, and will next battle Rafael Nicolas Dionisio, who defeated Richard Paulino, 21-13, 21-12.

    Geverjuan edged Roberto Pineda, 24-26, 26-24, 21-12, to set up a quarterfinal match with Benjamin Silva, a 21-12, 21-17 winner over Carl Justine Eugenio.

    Gabuelo outclassed John Paul Yabut, 21-9, 21-19, and will next face Ruben Haramel, who whipped Zedrick Paul Montemayor, 21-16, 21-1.

    Emilio Mangubat beat Neil Andrew Pineda, 21-14, 21-17, to arrange a quarterfinal match against Shawn Sangalang, who won over Chris Sanchez, 21-13, 21-15.

    National juniors standouts Aldreen Rae Concepcion, Aira Mae Nicole Albo, Alyssa Gerverjuan, Charmane Shane Salvador, Mariya Anghela Sevilla and Sarah Joy Barredo also advanced to the girls’ 19-under singles quarterfinals.

    Concepcion trounced Kim Therese Jarabelo, 21-11, 21-12, to set up a quarterfinal showdown with Janine Peligrino, who beat Ysabelle Marie Diaz, 21-13, 21-14.

    Geverjuan outclassed Mikaela Aquino, 21-14, 21-15, and will next battle fellow national player Albo, a 21-5, 21-4 winner over Geraldine Delizo.

    Salvador beat Alexandrea Kyla Lim, 21-15, 22-20, and will next face Margarita Villacorta, who advanced when Celina Denise Javier retired with the score at 21-18, 8-7.

    Sevilla trashed Joanna Alyssa San Pedro, 21-3, 21-12, and will next take on Barredo, who edged out Monica Rivera, 21-10, 21-12 in the tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Badminton Association, supported by Sun Cellular, Smart Communications, MVP Sports Foundation, PBA Smash Pilipinas and Babolat.
