PBA-Smash Pilipinas standout Kevin Dalisay pulled off a shock 21-15, 21-18 victory over joint top seed Ahmadi Binn Abdul Saman of Malaysia on Sunday to barge into the quarterfinal round of the FDG Cup Open and Invitational badminton tournament at Powersmash Badminton Center in Makati.
Dalisay came through with big shots to unsettle Saman and complete the thrilling 52-minute win for a duel with national teammate Ros Pedrosa, who repulsed Miggy Leonardo of Team Allied, 17-21, 21-13, 21-15.
Top seed Dea Adirangga of Indonesia downed Rabie Oba-ob, 21-18, 19-21, 21-12, to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with Malaysian Mohammad Arif Ab Latif, who defeated off Wilson Joseph, 21-13, 21-11.
Toby Gadi, the top Filipino shuttler seeded seventh in the tournament, clobbered Earl Guerrero, 21-17, 21-7, to set up a quarterfinal match with No. 11 and fellow national team mainstay R-Jay Ormilla, who repulsed Lance Bautista, 21-13, 16-21, 21-17.
Kevin Cudiamat also advanced by beating Sean Chan, 21-10, 21-10, while Kenneth Monterubio gained a quarterfinal berth with a 21-17, 21-17 win over Frell Gabuelo in the tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Badminton Association and held in honor of Robinsons Land Corp. president Frederick D. Go.
In women’s play, Sarah Joy Barredo dominated Camille Gotohio, 21-5, 21-13, and will next take on top seed Chiang Pei Hsin of Taiwan, who beat Anghela Sevilla, 21-19, 21-16.
China’s Lili Wang whipped Macy Salvador, 21-5, 21-7, and Alyssa Geverjuan beat Virginia Lopez, 21-10, 21-18 to also reach the quarterfinals set on Friday also at Powersmash.
Indonesia’s Asifa Farisma defeated Descka Calimlim, 21-16, 21-12, to set up a showdown with Poi Tan, who beat Shane Salvador, 21-13, 16-21, 21-14.
No. 4 Nicole Albo bested La Salle’s Janine Peligrino, 21-10, 21-17, to arrange a duel with national teammate Aldreen Concepcion, who turned back Mitzel Buiza, 21-16, 19-21, 21-8, in the event held in partnership with Smart Live More, Smash Pilipinas, the PNRS and Partners Cup with Li-ning as official shuttlecock.
The Partners Cup, which features employees and business partners of the RLC, is also set on Friday and the Invitational tournament featuring former world No. 1s Wang Lin and Wang Xin of China, FDG, and some of the country’s current and former top players, will be held on Saturday.
