ANNA Patricia Barredo outclassed second seed Pauline Tan, 22-20, 9-21, 22-20, to start her campaign in the women’s open singles on Wednesday in the FDG Cup 2015 Open and Invitational Badminton Championships at Powersmash in Makati City.
PBA-Smash Pilipinas bet Barredo rebounded strong from a second-set meltdown, dragging the top Allied-NVBA bet Tan to a see-saw match in the decider before sealing the 40-minute victory at the start of the four-day event offering Philippine Badminton Association ranking points.
Barredo advanced to a second round match against La Salle’s Lindsay Tercias, who also eked out a three-set win, against Adamson’s Christine Garin, 21-23, 22-20, 21-16.
Third seed Airah Albo of PBA-Smash scored a walkover win over Kristine Mandap, while fourth seed Monica Rivera survived Susmita Ramos, 21-13, 20-23, 21-12. Gelita Castilo and Janel Dihiansan turned back Mariya Sevilla, 21-12, 14-21, 21-7, and Mary Ann Maranon, 21-19, 18-21, 21-18, respectively.
Aldreen Concepcion, Alyssa Geverjuan, Marinel Diansay, Cassandra Lim, Mikaela Aquino, Jiselle Capillo, Aprille Bibiano, and Malvinne Alcala also matched on to the next round after trouncing their foes
Jochelle Alvarez won when Elisha Ongcuangco retired in the first set and will next face top seed Sarah Joy Barredo who drew a bye in the opening round.
In the men’s open singles, top seed Kevin Cudiamat of Team Prima blasted Malaysian Wee Peng Sim, 21-9, 21-17, setting up a second-round duel with Carlos Cayanan, who thwarted another Malaysian, Eizian Muneer, 21-19, 21-18.
Vietnam’s Van Thank won by default over No. 10 Lance Bautista and will meet Paul John Pantig, a 21-14, 21-13 victor over Vincent Bautista.
Meanwhile, London Olympics silver medalist Mizuki Fujii arrived from Japan on Thursday, while former Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat will hit town on Friday. They will play exhibition matches with Frederick Go and Kennevic Asuncion on Sunday.
