Philippine track and field team captures 10 gold medals in Thailand Open

JESSA Mangsat and Edgardo Alejan Jr. led the way as the Philippines captured 10 gold and six bronze medals in the Thailand Open Athletics Championships recently.

M­angsat clocked 11 minutes and 10.08 seconds in winning the gold in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, shattering her own mark of 11:25.70 she set in this year’s Philippine National Games.

Alejan Jr. topped the men’s 400m with a time of 46.95 seconds and teamed with Archand Christian Bagsit, Julius Nierras and Isidro Del Prado Jr. in winning the 4x400m relay. The team clocked 3:08.04.

Arniel Ferrera threw 60.69 meters to rule the hammer throw, while Katherine Kay Santos leaped 5.99 meters to top the women’s long jump.

Mervin Guarte won the 800-m run in one minute and 50.91 seconds, Jennyrose Rosales topped the women’s 400m in 55.87 seconds, and Riezel Buenaventura rules the women’s pole vault by clearing 3.85 meters.

The junior athletes also came out with impressive finishes, with Evalyn Palabrica taking home the girls javelin gold with a throw of 43.32m, and Mary Lyn Avila clocking 1:04.44 to top the women’s 400m hurdles.
