COLLEGE of St. Benilde's Julian Reem Fuentes set a new men's long jump record on Thursday in winning gold in the 91st NCAA track and field competition at the Philsports track and field oval in Pasig City.
Fuentes registered 7.42 meters on his last jump to erase the league's old mark of 7.39 m.
The 21-year-old from Cordon, Isabela, a second year Computer Applications student, set a new mark right on his first jump by leaping 7.39m before coming through strong in the end.
"I still went for a better performance even though I already broke it in the first jump because I want to leave a lasting impression," said Fuentes.
Arellano University’s Albert Vallejo took the silver medal with a 7.21-m leap, edging Mapua's Mark Vincent Ramos, who posted the same distance but the former had the better second-best attempt.
San Beda's Jericho Hilario claimed the juniors' long jump gold with 6.38 m while La Salle-Greenhills' Emilio Florendo copped the high school discus throw gold with 39.12 m.
