FORMER champion Mary Grace de los Santos didn’t have to push too hard to match her clocking from the finals last year, doing just enough to top the Metro Manila qualifying leg of the 38th National Milo Marathon on Sunday the Mall of Asia Grounds.

De los Santos, winner of the Milo Marathon Finals in 2012 and a veteran of international events, finished the 42-kilometer race in three hours, eight minutes and 18 seconds, far from her 2:54:27 time in finishing second overall in the final last year.

      • But the runner from Zamboanga still finished well clear of her pursuers, with Jennelyn Nobleza taking second place in 3:17:43 and Aileen Tolentino third in 3:33:04.

The training in Baguio, De los Santos says, made the difference.

“Advantage ko ’yung klima sa Baguio kasi malamig tapos may mga uphill pa doon, mas nakatulong sa akin," said De los Santos.

Ireneo Raquin, meanwhile, emerged on top of the men’s eliminations with a 2:31:15 clocking, over a minute quicker than his time from the finals last year where he placed third.

Jeson Agravente came in second in 2:38:36 and Rafael Poliquit Jr. finished third in 2:44:15.

It was the best time and result for Raquin, a 29-year-old runner from Agos, Occidental Mindoro, in five years of participating in the Milo Marathon.

“Best finish ko ito, ang ganda ng pakiramdam ko pagdating sa finish line last year kasi pagod na pagod ako pagtawid ko ng finish line,” he said.

"Hindi ko in-expect na manalo kasi maraming nag-eensayo na magagaling na sumali dito," he added.

Raquin said the P50,000 cash prize will be used for his wife's application for a job as housekeeper in Hong Kong.

The next qualifying legs is set in Naga on August 24 followed by the Lucena leg (August 31), Puerto Princesa (September 7), Lipa (September 14), Iloilo (September 21), Bacolod (September 28), Tagbilaran (October 5), Cebu (October 5), Butuan (October 19), Cagayan de Oro (November 9), General Santos (November 16) and Davao (November 23).
