JAMES Darrel Orduna won the men's 10-kilometer race in the Lazada Run on Sunday at the Marina Barrage in Singapore.
The run drew over 8,000 runners from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The 23-year-old Orduna, middle and long-distance runner from the University of the East, is a three-time UAAP MVP in track and field, including his rookie year in Season 81.
"Nagbunga ang hard work at training. Napakagaan sa feeling, fulfilling dahil six countries ang kalaban at isa ako sa nag-top one," Orduna told SPIN.ph after the race.
Other Filipino runners in the 21k and 10k events were Salvador Polillo, Jevie Avilla, Lany Adaog, Kristine Santillan and Jennelyn Nidoy.
Success is a sacrifice
A former collegiate champion getting a rare chance in international competition, Orduna said he was determined to make it count.
Orduna won US$2,000 (around P100,000).
"Pinakamahirap na part is yung gigising, babangon ka every morning, at paglaban sa katamaran," he said.
"Isa din sa mga practices na kailangan is having a strong mindset. kasi yung mga iniisip mo ay hindi impossible mangyari," he added.
He was also grateful to the e-commerce brand for giving non-members of the national team a chance to represent the country.
"Super thankful ako sa opportunity na binigay nila [Lazada] samin na dalhin kami dito. Sana magkaroon pa ulit nang maraming event na tutulong sa ibang athletes sa Pilipinas na makamit mga pangarap nila," Orduna said.
