EJ OBIENA is scheduled to compete in a week's time after a brief but “special” homecoming to the Philippines.

Just weeks following his fourth-place finish in the Paris Olympics, Obiena is already in Italy to prepare for the Lausanne Diamond League on August 22, one of the major tournaments that the Filipino pole vaulter will be competing in for the remainder of the season.

The good news is that Obiena is fresh from an emotional homecoming where he joined Team Philippines led by Carlos Yulo for a heroes’ welcome, as they were honored by various sectors including no less than President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The entire delegation was recognized after Yulo bagged two gold medals in the Paris Games, with Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas claiming bronzes as well.

A timely pick-me-up for EJ

Though definitely exhausting due to the quick turnaround to fly to Italy, Obiena said he had a grand time in his brief return to Manila, while also apologizing for not taking part in the parade.

“It has been said, ‘You never recognise the greatest moments in life until they're in your rearview mirror.’ And it’s true. As I am en route back to Italy and training, I have come to realize just now how special the last 24 hours, being at home in the Philippines, has been,” Obiena wrote on his Facebook page.

“From such a wonderfully warm reception at Malacanang; to great conversations in-flight and on the bus rides with the other athletes; to quickly visiting my alma mater (Chiang Kai Shek College); to meeting many of my fellow countrymen. What a special time that will forever be etched in my memories. Thank you!”

“I am sorry I wasn’t in the parade, but as you know my season’s not over and there are upcoming competitions that I will compete in, starting in six days,” he continued.

As he resumes his campaign, Obiena said he feels lucky to have witnessed the best time for Philippine sports.

“I have to say what’s best of all, is the fact this is clearly the golden era of Philippines sports, and we are all witness to it! It took 97 years for ate (Hidilyn Diaz) to win our first gold medal, and now three years later, (Yulo) wins two. Just wow! What a great time for our nation’s sports! Let’s all take a moment to take this all in, and enjoy,” said Obiena.
