EJ OBIENA qualified for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing after clearing 5.90 meters in the Weltklasse Zurich in Germany.
Obiena equalled the minimum qualifying standard of 5.90 in his first competition during the World Championships qualification period that began on August 23 and will end on August 22, 2027.
The Filipino pole vaulter nearly tied his season best of 5.91 meters in the Golden Sand meet last August 17.
Obiena finished fifth place in the competition won by world-record holder Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, who cleared 6.25 meters in the meet that is part of the Wanda Diamond League calendar.
Emmanouil Karalis of Greece placed second with 6.20, while Sondre Guttormsen of Norway took third position with 6.00. Christopher Nilsen got the fourth spot with 5.90, claiming the higher placing over Obiena via countback.
Obiena cleared 5.80 on the third attempt to stay alive, and registered 5.90 on the first try to hit the World Championship qualification.
Obiena failed to tie his personal-best 6.00 on his next three jumps.
