EJ OBIENA will receive P250,000 from the Philippine Sports Commission as incentive for breaking his own national record in the Wanda Diamond League leg in France.

The PSC approved the cash incentive in its board meeting on Tuesday.

Under Section 8 of the Republic Act 10699 or the expanded National Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001, “national athletes and other athletes who surpass Philippine record or ranking in any measurable international sports competition shall be given cash incentives, the amount of which may be determined by the PSC.”

Obiena shattered his own Philippine record last week in Paris when he cleared 5.91 meters, breaking his own record of 5.87 meters he set in Poland last July.

The Paris meet is the second event Obiena competed in since his 11th-place finish in the Tokyo Olympics.

Obiena finished second in the France meet, with Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis taking the crown by clearing 6.01 meters.
