EJ Obiena finishes second in Oslo meet using borrowed poles

EJ OBIENA placed second in the Diamond League Oslo Bislett Games despite another case of a broken pole on Thursday.

Obiena cleared the bar at 5.72 meters in a tie with Emmanouil Karalis of Greece. KC Lightfoot of the United States ruled the event with 5.82 meters.

The Filipino pole vaulter was forced to borrow from Lightfoot and another competitor in the Menno Vloon event in Netherlands after another pole broke.

“Another pole broken and it’s not even… On the brighter side of things, thanks to (Vloon) and (Lightfoot) for lending me poles to jump on. Greatly appreciate it gentleman,” said Obiena.

    Obiena finished seventh in the Ostava Golden Spike in Czech Republic after also breaking his pole that only arrived a few days before the actual competition due to delays in the shipment.

    Obiena said he will now be looking for poles to use for his next event – the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm, Sweden.
