Aside from bagging the silver in the competition, Obiena shattered his own Philippine record of 5.80 meters he set early this month when he won a gold in Berlin.

Obiena continues to show improvement during his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics. His training camp is in Italy under Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

It is also his third podium finish this month after he also captured a gold medal in a meet in Dortmund.

“It’s such a great confidence boosting and momentum generating feat,” said Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico. “EJ and his coach, Vitaly Petrov, have been trying new things and EJ has adjusted exceedingly well to the techniques and new equipment.

“I can see EJ improving some more in the next few months. Looking forward, EJ and his team are mindful of the potential for injury and will adjust their regimen accordingly. He’ll must likely break the Philippine indoor record again before the season is over,” Juico added.
