SOUTHWESTERN University goes for a sweep of the Cesafi men’s basketball finals when the Cobras take on the University of the Visayas Green Lancers in Game Three on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Lancers have not won in five games against the Cobras this season, but SWU coach Yayoy Alcoseba is warning his wards of overconfidence.
SWU beat UV, 73-60, in Game Two of the best-of-three series on Thursday.
“Championship is not ours until we win one more game. So in a best-of-five series we need three wins. We expect Game Three to be the hardest. We need to execute our game plan. And we need to have a total team effort for us to win the third game,” Alcoseba said.
UV managed to eke out a win against SWU in last year’s title series, and Lancers coach Felix Belano believes they can still prevent a sweep and extend the series.
“I will continue to believe. Mahirap pero pwede mangyari. Kahit sa PBA, nangyayari ang ganito. A true warrior finishes the battle until the last breath. It’s not over until it’s over. I challenge them to rise to the occasion,” said Belano, under pressure to deliver after taking the job in 2011. He took over from Elmer Cabahug, who steered the team to nine straight titles. The last time UV won the title was in 2009, the last year Greg Slaughter played for the Lancers.
“Nakaka-frustrate but it’s not over yet. Maraming adjustments na kailangan gawin. Basketball is for intelligent and driven people. Importante ang character talaga. Lahat pwede ko ituro sa mga players ko coming from my experience as one pero ang character and desire, mahirap hugutin,” Belano said.
