MALAYSIA avoided the upset ax against Vietnam, pulling off an 86-85 squeaker in the first overtime game in this Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Championship on Tuesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Choo Wei Hong knocked down the midrange jumper that broke the hearts of a Vietnamese team ranked 25 spots below the Malaysians in the Fiba rankings, lifting Malaysia to its second win in five games.
Ting Chun Hong then blocked the shot of Ngoc Le on the other end to preserve the result for the Malaysians, who dealt the Vietnamese their third loss in four games.
For a while, though, the Vietnamese looked poised for an upset as they led by six points late in regulation, but allowed the Malaysians to fight back.
Le also buried two charities off a Ting foul that gave Vietnam the lead at 85-84, but that set the stage for Choo’s heroics.
