ANDY Murray and the Manila Mavericks finally came away with a win to end their home leg of the International Premier Tennis League on a high note.
The Mavericks beat the Singapore Slammers, 27-19, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena for their first victory in the four-leg league event even with the absence of Maria Sharapova in the team and the entry of Serena Williams in the Slammers’ line-up.
Murray finally notched a win for the Mavericks after dropping four sets in a row as he and Kirsten Flipkens beat Williams and Lleyton Hewitt, 6-1, in the mixed doubles match.
The world No. 6 also beat Nick Kyrgios, 6-5 (7-5), in the final match of the Manila leg.
Mark Philippousis, a late replacement to the injured Carlos Moya, beat Pat Rafter, 6-2, in the legends singles, before Filipino netter Treat Huey and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga overcame Tomas
Berdych and Hewitt, 6-5, in the men’s doubles.
The Slammers’ lone win came from Williams who defeated Kirsten Flipkens, 6-3, in the women’s singles.
