Philippines wins seven gold medals in Asia Cup archery competition

    Mar 24, 2015

AMAYA Paz-Cojuangco led the Philippine archery team to seven gold medals in the Asia Cup recently in Bangkok, Thailand.

Paz-Cojuangco claimed five gold medals, topping the qualification round of the individual women’s compound, women’s compound team with Jennifer Chan and Andrea Robles, and mixed compound team with Jose Ferdinand Adriano, that merited a medal.

Paz-Cojuangco, Chan, and Robles beat India, 224-223, in the finals of the Olympic round of the women’s compound team, before teaming up with Adriano in the Olympic round of the mixed compound team finals to beat China, 151-142, to also capture the gold.

Adriano also tabbed the gold in the qualification round of the individual men’s compound and the men’s compound team along with Paul Marton Dela Cruz and Earl Benjamin Yap.

Paz-Cojuangco bagged the lone silver in the campaign, getting it in the Olympic round of the individual women’s compound. Chan took the only bronze of the country in the individual women’s compound event.

Paz-Cojuangco said the performance in the Asia Cup is a good sign for the country’s campaign in the Southeast Asian Games this June in Singapore.

“Definitely, the showing tells us that we really have a good chance of winning the gold medal this June,” said Paz-Cojuangco during Tuesday's luncheon and press conference for the team at the Aristocrat Restaurant in Manila.

The wife of former archer Kit Cojuangco is also hopeful the team will do well in the world championship in Denmark in July. In 2006, the country placed third behind United States and China in the team compound event.

“Hopefully, we could reach that level again this year and in the coming years with new blood in the team,” said Paz-Cojuangco.

It was another fine performance for Philippine archers after Luis Gabriel Moreno won gold in last year’s mixed doubles international team event of the Youth Olympic Games and De la Cruz giving the country its first medal (bronze) in the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

“For the past eight months, we’ve done fantastically well. It’s exciting for Philippine archery,” said Philippine Archers National Network and Alliance (Panna) president Frederico Moreno.
