Roman Gabriel, NFL MVP and league's first Fil-Am quarterback, dies at 83

ROMAN Gabriel, the first Filipino-American quarterback in the NFL and the league MVP in 1969, passed away at the age of 83 at home due to natural causes.

His son, Roman Gabriel III, made the announcement on social media.

Gabriel's Filipino roots

Possessing a remarkable physical stature and a formidable throwing arm, Gabriel, who was born in North Carolina to Edna Mae Wyatt and a Filipino immigrant named Roman Ildonzo Gabriel, Sr., became the No. 2 draft pick for the Los Angeles Rams in 1962.

Despite playing during an era dominated by ground-oriented offenses, he held the Rams' team record with an impressive 154 touchdown passes.

    Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 235 pounds, Gabriel was large for a quarterback of his time. Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi once referred to him as "a big telephone pole," highlighting his imposing presence.

    Gabriel spent 11 years with the Rams and five with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was traded following the Rams' acquisition of John Hadl. Renowned for his leadership and mentorship qualities, he left a lasting impact on his teammates.

    Despite being a highly sought-after prospect, Gabriel ultimately signed with the Rams after being selected as the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft. Throughout his career, he displayed remarkable athleticism and skill, leading the Rams to success during his tenure.

    After retiring from football, Gabriel pursued various endeavors, including broadcasting NFL games for CBS and coaching at different levels. Additionally, he ventured into acting, appearing in films such as "Skidoo" and "The Undefeated," as well as numerous television shows.
