LOCAL celebrities will join top international triathletes in the Yellow Cab Challenge Philippines in Subic-Bataan on February 21.

TV host and multi-sport enthusiast Drew Arellano leads several personalities who will race in the 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-km bike and 21.1-km run in a course located within the sprawling former US Navy base.

Also participating is GMA News anchor Kara David who will run as a member of Powerpops TriKings while former TGIS actor Onemig Bondoc will also take part in the run relay.

Other celebrities include ex-PBB housemate Paul Jake Castillo, TV commercial director and entrepreneur Sid Maderazo and triathlon coach Miguel Antonio Lopez. The race offers some of the biggest prizes in Asia.

A total of 729 participants took part in the first race in Bataan last year that launched one of the most prestigious international triathlon brands in the Asian region. This year’s race in Subic has been described as “tough” while the second leg - to be held in Camarines Sur this June - will be run in a “fast” course.

The Aquasphere Swim Course starts from the white sand beach of Camayan Resort and ventures into Ilanin Bay where the waters are home to a protected marine preserve that also hides two shipwrecks.

The updated Felt Bike Course will have racers taking off from Adventure Beach on smooth, tree-lined roads on the way to the Bataan Technology Park (BTPI) - once the site of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center where 400,000 refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia passed through on their way to the United States. After tackling the hilly terrain, cyclists will enter the town of Morong.

The last challenge is the 2XU Running Course that begins as a shaded forest run through the Ilanin Forest Reserve where paved roads morph into a rare triple canopy run.
