AUSTRALIAN elites Sam Betten and Dimity Lee-Duke are expected to defend their respective titles in the Bellevue Resort 5i50 Triathlon in Panglao, Bohol on November 6.

“The Bellevue has been our host in Bohol for the 5150 in the past couple of years now they are our title sponsors,”  said Sunrise Events Inc. president Wilfred Uytengsu during the press launch at the Bellevue Hotel in Alabang on Tuesday afternoon.

The competitive field also includes Filipina elite Monica Torres, Aussie Michelle Duffield, Amelia Rose Watkinson of New Zealand and local resident Dan Brown.  More than 600 participants from 25 countries are expected on race day.

The 5150 course is composed of a 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run and has been held for several years in the island province.

Uytengsu describes the Bohol course as “fantastic”- characterized by good swimming conditions in the pristine open water and a  first class road system – a challenge to find in many parts of the Philippines - for the bike and run legs on relatively flat terrain that features narrow roads and hilly areas.

The annual race is attractive to triathletes seeking to be active and honing their skills at the end of the year and the tri season. The event will also include the Sunrise Super Sprint category featuring a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run- a first for Bohol and an attractive feature for first-time multi-sport enthusiasts.

“As the sport grows we try to find ways to bring more people into it … this is very doable and is a very reasonable level and is the way to start in the sport or some people coming back from injury who are easing themselves back in,” said Uytengsu.

Bellevue Hotels managing director Ryan Chan said a sporting event such as the 5150 will complement the province’s tourism efforts.
