Thousands of Tour of Fireflies cyclists to press call for action against climate change

THOUSANDS of biking enthusiasts are expected to take part in the 16th Tour of the Fireflies on Sunday to call for solutions to climate change, faulty transportation systems and the worsening pollution.

According to the advocacy group Firefly Brigade, the B.I.G. Ride – Bicycles InteGral to Mobility Solutions - will be the theme of this year’s tour that is aimed to promote bicycles as part of a long-term solution to traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, and climate change.

“Together with bicyclists from all over the Philippines, the 16th Tour of the Fireflies 2015 calls the attention of the region’s leaders to urgent action to the grave consequences of climate change on vulnerable economies and its people,” Firefly Brigade president Jack Yabut said.

“We urge them to integrate non-motorized transportation (NMT) in effective and sustainable transportation (SusTran) plans. The ToF B.I.G. ride emphasizes that biking is good,” he added.

Riders will start at 6 a.m. at the Tiendesitas Mall in Ortigas Center and will thread a 30-kilomeeter route that will encompass the cities of Pasig, Mandaluyong, Quezon City and Marikina before returning to Tiendesitas for a program. There will also be simultaneous rides in other cities nationwide.

Prizes will be given for best costume, decorated bicycle and best group in coordinated costumes. The theme will be ‘Sustainable Transport’ and ‘Mobility-problems-solutions.’ The biggest contingent and the oldest and youngest riders will also be given recognition.

Also partnering in the event are the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Philippine National Police and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
