THE Endurance Weekend at Filinvest City has become a staple for mountain bike enthusiasts in the metropolis and is expected to bring together the largest contingent of bikers yet when its fourth staging is held from October 8 to 9.

During a media event at the Crimson Hotel in Alabang on Tuesday evening, Don Ubaldo, senior assistant vice president and project head, said he expects the event to draw a field of 500 bikers, more than double compared to last year’s participants.

The MTB race, with three time categories (24 hours, 12 hours, six hours), will feature an updated course and trails. Racers can join as solo or part of a team that can either be all-male or mixed.

A cyclist himself, Ubaldo said his company continually works with bike groups to maintain and develop the trails within the commercial-residential enclave. He stressed that the race would require some background in endurance racing as well as training.

But despite the race being the event's main draw, bike coach Dondie Dormitorio said the Endurance Weekend is more like a festival than a competition.

“[It's] one of the most unique [events] in the country. I don’t really train to win (for this race) but as a mountain biker, I consider it more as a personal challenge,” he said.

The annual race is one of the initiatives in promoting Filinvest City to the active lifestyle set. Bike lanes are currently also being developed for road bikes as well as the weekly Car-less Sundays for both cyclists and runners.
