Five days before Men's Health Urbanathlon. Here's what you should do to get ready

With the Urbanathlon just five days away, we bet you can't wait for that moment where you’ll be deemed an urbanathlete. So to ensure you arrive at the event in your best possible shape, we give you seven ways to get race-ready.

#1. Train Right

To prepare your body for the big event, give yourself an extra rest day the week of the race by reducing your daily runs by 50 to 60 percent of their normal volume, writes marathoner and running coach Jeff Gaudette for Runners Connect.  

Now, if you’re following the one-month exercise program developed by certified trainer Ferdinand Manabat for the Urbanathlon, we’re pretty confident you’re ready for the whole boatload of challenging obstacles in the race. Just stick to your training routine, sir.

#2. Fuel Yourself Properly 

The Urbanathlon may be the toughest 10-K...but it's still just a 10-K. It's no mary or half-mary, so you should be fine with your current nutrition plan. The best advice? Get some high-quality protein and carbohydrates in around 3 to 4 hours before the race to fuel your muscles. And don't forget the water. Post-race meal is important, too: Pig out in a nearby fast food joint, and all your gains could go to waste. Pack a balanced meal for after you run.

Remember, too, that the race starts early, so you should be thinking about prepping all your food the night before.

 #3. Get Enough Sleep

The rest you get leading up to the race is just as significant as the night before, so always value quality sleep.

Now, the best way to gauge how much sleep you need is to go to bed at the same time every night and then wake up on your own, without the aid of an alarm clock, says Bob Gazzola, M.D., a longtime runner, to Running Times.

#4. Pack Your Gear Beforehand

By beforehand, we mean you should pack NOW. It helps to have these essentials before you head out on the trail: singlet, running shoes, a snack or two, a small towel, and an extra clothing to put on after a race. Remember, you'll be going through some obstacles with mud and ice, so make sure you're wearing shoes and clothes that can take the punishment.

To avoid losing your valuables — like money, mobile phone, and keys — just bring them with you as you race. We suggest a waterproof fanny pack.

#5. Know Your Path


Assembly time for all runners is at 5 a.m. Our suggestion? You pre-plan your travel so you’ll arrive early, enough to let you warm up before the race.

If you’re going by private vehicle, note that Nuvali, the location of the race, is approximately less than an hour’s drive from the city. It’s accessible through several exits along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX): Greenfield City/Unilab/Mamplasan (secured access), Sta. Rosa, Eton City-Greenfield, Silangan, and Calamba.

#6. Relax!

We know, pre-race nerves is quite normal, especially given the challenging obstacles you'll be facing in the Urbanathlon, but the best you can do is to feed your mind with positive expectancy. You can do it. Good luck!
