Chris Sports brings in NBA trainers for series of youth basketball, volleyball workshops

YOUNG basketball and football players will get a chance to hone their skills with the help of NBA trainers and former PBA players beginning this February as athletic retail chain Chris Sports launches a series of two-day basketball, football and recovery workshops.

The inaugural SKLZ Elite Workshop on Performance and Recovery, Skill-Specific Basketball and Soccer Programs will include basketball, football, and recovery activities from February 20 to 21 at Xavier School in San Juan City.

The Carlsbad, California-based SKLZ develops skill and performance training products and programs designed for athletes of all levels.

In addition to former PBA player Nic Belasco and Sigla (former Soccerroo) F.C., the workshop will feature world-renowned coaches such as Paul Fabritz, a Performance Enhancement Coach and skills trainer to hundreds of athletes including NBA, WNBA, and D1 players.

For the football workshops, Jenn Kershaw, international sales manager of SKLZ, will work with Sigla F.C. (formerly Team Socceroo) of the United Football League and a club dedicated to the growth and developmental of grassroots and the youth in Philippine Football.

Kershaw, who played goalkeeper for Club Soccer in Cal South Division for 13 years, said they will work on “dribbling drills, passing and control to improve skill testing, agility and quickness” of the youth players.

Recovery activities will be led by Cody Carter, EXOS Performance Innovation team manager who has 10 years of coaching youth athletes under his belt. He intends to teach a system to coaches and trainers that will help prevent injuries and over-training of their athletes.   

Fabritz, who specializes in vertical jump and explosiveness training, is the personal performance trainer for James Harden of the Houston Rockets, the Phoenix Suns’ Alex Len and Derrick Williams of the New York Knicks.

“We regress the drills a little bit (for the younger players). Everything about basketball development and even soccer performance, it’s all about progressions. We don’t start everybody at the same level…  Whether we work with an NBA superstar or youth player the principles are the same — get your skills better,” Fabritz said during a press conference at Century City Mall in Makati City on Friday morning.

Fabritz’s story as a basketball player became known when he improved his maximum vertical jump from 32” to 47” in just over a year and went from barely touching the rim to throwing down full windmill dunks.

“Basketball player development is not just specific drills but the progression of those drills,” Fabritz explained.

The two-day basketball, football and recovery workshops are expected to draw over 300 participants. Separate programs will be prepared for coaches of basketball and football. Trainers and fitness enthusiasts will benefit from the recovery workshop.
