Team Crazylight led by Azkals Phil Younghusband took top honors in last Saturday’s adidas Celebrity Squash Challenge at the Manila Polo Club.

The squad composed of the Younghusbands, model-entertainment anchor Phomela Baranda, Randy Precilla, Peter Hager, Ben Wintle, Margot Garcia and Rhett Eala bested three other teams in the annual tourney hosted by model-actress Tweetie de Leon-Gonzales.

Also representing the sports field in their green day glo shirts were Phil’s Azkal teammates Anton del Rosario, younger brother James Younghusband and Aly Borromeo, and former La Salle Green Archer Dino Aldeguer.

Each player played three matches in a round-robin format with the team whose members win the most matches securing first place.

Adding luster to the elite cast were business scion Ernie Lopez, lawyer Karen Jimeno, designers Rhett Eala and Patrice Diaz, model Rissa Trillo, fashion maven Apples Aberin, events manager Teddy Dario and TV host Tim Yap.

The event gathered athletes, entertainers and business for the one-day event for the benefit of the ICANSERVE Foundation with partners BMW, Gatorade, Unilever, Havaianas, Fresh Papaya, Saga Events, FINCAP Securities Inc., Peak Form and Solaire.

Awarding ceremonies with cocktails were later held at the club’s sports lounge.

Now on its sixth year, the event was the brainchild of de Leon-Gonzales who assembled representatives from the fashion, entertainment and business industries.

“It’s my last as a board member but we all agreed we’re all friends here so yeah lets all play together, let’s make it a regular thing so I guess in that alone I was successful in my mission to promote the sport,” said Gonzales, an avid fitness enthusiast.

“Some are really excellent players, some were all national team players. Some are athletes with no squash background, some are excellent club players, some are occasional squashers and others are beginners. It’s anyone’s game. All players are distributed so it means each team has a fighting chance.”

The event was a fitting swansong for Gonzales, who gathered the biggest field for the celebrity tournament.

“It’s been a good run. It’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do without the help of these people. They all chipped, pitched in and gave their share to helping out a friend. We’re all here to have fun and it feels like a birthday party,” she told
