Herbalife expert Dana Ryan dispels myth sports nutrition only for elite, shares tips to PH athletes

SPORTS nutrition is not just for athletes but for everyone.

This was the statement made by Herbalife senior manager for sports performance and education Dr. Dana Ryan, dispelling the myth that sports nutrition is only limited for athletes.

Ryan, who was recently in Manila for Herbalife’s grand gathering called ‘Spectacular’ at the SMX Convention Center, said sports nutrition can be done by everyone who wants to have an active healthy lifestyle.

“Overall, the biggest thing is I know as sports nutrition is starting to become more prevalent, I think it is important to work to dispel the myth that sports nutrition is only for the elite," she said.

“It’s really for that everyday person. Anyone that is active, anyone that wants its heart rate up, sweating a little bit, these principles of sports nutrition really apply to everybody and will ultimately make a big difference in whether or not they see results with their goals,” added Ryan.

Ryan, who has developed nutrition and sports performance programs for the LA Galaxy and FC Barcelona football teams, said a few of the principles of sports nutrition include eating the right amount of protein to rebuild muscles, and carbohydrates for energy.

Ryan also said having an active healthy lifestyle is not limited to only going to the gym, saying that a person can have three, 10-minute exercises per day that can be incorporated during the day, instead of one 30-minute workout.

“Sometimes, there is a misconception that you have to go to the gym, lift weights, run at the track. Living an active healthy lifestyle means incorporating movement into your day,” said Ryan.

During the Herbalife event, Ryan also spoke with Filipino athletes to share knowledge about sports nutrition.

“They asked amazing questions. A lot of times, athletes are shy but this group is not shy. I talked about how to structure supplements around their training program. Sometimes it may be a challenge to a lot of athletes on how to set up what to take pre-workout, during training, and post-workout. It  set a structure on getting them to understand what their body needs,” said Ryan.
