DAVAO City – Sunrise Events president and founder Wilfred Uytengsu took pride in finally completing their vision of bringing the Ironman triathlon event in the Philippines with the upcoming Alveo Ironman 70.3 Davao on Sunday at Azuela Cove her.

Uytengsu looked back at his company’s goal when they started a decade ago about bringing the prestigious race all over the country. And in celebration of their 10th anniversary, he beamed proudly after turning that dream into a reality.

“Ten years ago, we brought the first Ironman to Camsur. My mission for doing that was to bring Ironman to the Philippines. In the ten years since, we have expanded the number of races that we have in the Philippines. But we can’t truly say that Ironman is in the Philippines if we’re not in Luzon, Visayas and now here in Mindanao. So now, Ironman is truly in the Philippines”, he said on Friday at the press launch celebrating the first Ironman race in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed her warm welcome to participating athletes and guests along with the officials, sponsors and partners of the event.

“I have been wanting to do Ironman since my first term here in Davao City that was way back 2012. But now, finally Ironman. Kinakabahan ako but I’m very very happy and excited for the next three days for Davao City,” she said.

Duterte emphasized that the success of the event is important to show the world that Davao can host international events and that the city government, and the community are ready to take on more sports tourism activities.

“We welcome all the participants wholeheartedly came here to Davao City despite the Martial Law in Mindanao. We hope that you get to experience Davao City the best way possible,” she added.

A total of 1,782 participants from the 39 countries will compete in the 1.9k swim, 90k bike, 21k run of Alveo Ironman 70.3.
