Spin.ph blogger Bobby Go takes first step in encouraging people to 'run for their lives'

SPIN.ph columnist Bobby Go is not just walking the walk, he’s talking the talk.

In his inaugural presentation of 'Run For Your Life, An Intro to Running and Living Better' as part of his Run Nation advocacy, Bobby shared his love for running and the reasons behind it to employees of Summit Media.   

“Running changed my life in a very big way," Bobby told members of the Summit Media family.

Fifteen years ago, the former business executive and head of the Mini Stop chain of stores discovered running and went into it in earnest starting 2008. He abandoned the boardroom four years ago for the open road and has never looked back.

“Running is the most natural human exercise. It is universal. It gives back more than it takes. And I believe every person can run,” Go said in promoting a healthier lifestyle.

To drive home his point, Go noted than in Asian countries he has been to, populations with fewer overweight people usually come from nations with less fastfood in their diet.

“In developing countries like Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia people buy fresh food in the markets almost everyday.”

He cited that “of all the sports, running creates an opportunity to create communities.”

The affable runner/triathlete/traveler also debunked myths which he described as ‘Excuses 101’ that keep people from running - it is expensive; it’s only for athletic people; it’s bad for the knees; that there isn’t time for it; the weather won't allow it.

Bobby also provided several useful information that included a how-to for beginners, running essentials and how to sustain it. For example, on “Getting Started,” he advises the following:

  1. Commit and motivate yourself.
  2. Walk longer/ farther / faster aka Time/ Distance/ Pace.
  3. Walk – Run –Walk
  4. Run.
  5. Be realistic… But shoot for the moon.
  6. Have a routine… But be flexible too.
  7. Run with a friend or a group… but also run alone (cathartic and very relaxing).
  8. Evolve through cross-training with a new or a different sport.
  9. R&R… and a word on medication, just don’t pop pills in your mouth.   

Bobby ended the talk with a short Q&A and looks forward to presenting to different groups of people in the future.

“My first presentation of 'Run For Your Life' was to the good people of Summit Media. I enjoyed sharing my take on the joys of running and how it can change lives, with folks who showed genuine interest to start and restart on this life-altering sport," he said.

"It doesn't matter if it's 2, 20, or 200 listening. If I can get even one person to take that step, I've done my part."
