ANYONE who doesn't consider Stephen Curry one of the all-time basketball greats must’ve never watched the NBA games in recent years or is clearly a hater. The two-time league Most Valuable Player and champion has achieved more in his nine seasons with the Golden State Warriors than most former superstars have throughout their entire careers. Need proof? Here it is:
1. He leads the franchise in playoff points (1,965) and assists (497). No doubt the Warriors are missing their most important player right now. The fact that Steph tops the record books in both categories is a testament to the magic he wields whenever he is in the game. Simply put, he is as deadly on the draw as he is on the double, with his ability to shoot from anywhere on the court, especially when it counts the most.
2. He’s the first player in NBA history to have made at least 400 three-pointers in a season. Curry has countless amazing three-point records under his belt (the fewest games to make 2,000 treys with 597, most treys made in a game with 13), but his 2016 feat (402) might be the most astonishing. This sounds even more astounding when you learn that he also holds the next two best records: 324 in ’17, and 286 in ’15.
3. He’s the first player in NBA history to record a 50-point game with one or fewer free throw attempts. Never mind that Steph shot a franchise-best 93.4% from the charity stripe in 2011; he torched Orlando's team on February 26, 2016 with a single trip to the line and 10 conversions beyond the arc. To think that he came off a 42-point game in Miami the night before is beyond comprehension.
4. He’s the first player in NBA history to lead the league in scoring while shooting above 50% from the field, 40% from three-point, and 90% from free throw. Curry joined six other members of the 50-40-club in convincing fashion (57-45-91), while flat-out dominating on the offensive end (career-best 30.1 ppg), to cap Golden State’s dream 2015-16 season. This was the year that defenders realized he is the league’s most unguardable player.
5. He’s the first player in NBA history to win the MVP award unanimously. Not Shaquille O’Neal or LeBron James, freaks of nature who both have fallen a vote shy of an undisputed selection, but a point guard (who is) listed at 6’3” and 190 pounds—skinny by league standards. By the way, this was the same player who led his team to the NBA record for best regular season with 73-9.
