Gorayeb relishes working with youngsters who have yet to be 'corrupted' by fame, fortune
Roger Gorayeb admits it is not up to him to decide on the PaliPure roster for next PVL conference beginning on July 1. Dante Peralta

COACH Roger Gorayeb hopes BaliPure would be able to retain the same squad that placed second in the PVL Reinforced Conference, saying he relishes leading to victory a group of players more focused on winning than earning.

“Gusto ko uli sila kasama kasi mga bata sila,” said Gorayeb. “Napaka-payak ng kanilang purpose sa paglalaro. Makalaro lang. Wala silang, ‘Magkano suweldo namin, magkano makukuha namin.’ Hindi pa corrupted mga utak nila.”

The Water Defenders locals were led by Risa Sato and Jasmine Nabor, who have played for Gorayeb at National University, with Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa, two of his top players at San Sebastian.

Also among the top players on Gorayeb’s club were FEU’s Jerrili Malabanan and NU’s Aiko Urrdas.

The PVL Open Conference starts on July 1.

The Water Defenders came up short in the import-laced Reinforced Conference, losing in three matches in the title series against Pocari Sweat.

Gorayeb admitted the composition of the team will be up to management, and he may also have a tough time reacquiring the National University players after he was replaced as coach.

“Depende pa kasi lalo na ‘yung mga tiga-NU, hindi na ako coach ng NU. Mahirap,” said Gorayeb.

BaliPure had an impressive conference that saw the team taking an automatic semifinal berth after topping the eliminations, easing through the semifinals before bowing to Pocari Sweat in the title series.

Gorayeb saw fulfillment in handling BaliPure because of the attitude of the players.

“Napakasarap hawakan ‘yung ganyan na hindi katulad ng kakausapin mo isang player tapos, eto suweldo mo. Kapag medyo mababa, sasabihin may offer sa kanila na ganun. Tignan mo ‘yung mga batang ito. I see a good future for them.

“Masaya sila kasama. Masaya akong kasama sila. Napaka-harmonious ng relationship. Symbiotic. I love you, you love me. Tuluy-tuloy kahit ano gawin mo, parang anak mo na kahit pagalitan mo, parang baliwala lang,” said Gorayeb.
