‘HUGOT’ motivated Kim Dy and Kim Fajardo of La Salle to exact payback on the University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Spikers frustrated the Lady Maroons to avenge their first loss of the season, 27-25, 25-11, 25-17, on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

La Salle was on a two-game winning run when UP spoiled their party, 22-25, 21-25, 19-25, on March 15.

For Dy and Fajardo, the only remedy to that painful loss was sweet revenge.

“Ayaw namin na natalo na nga kami ng first round tapos matatalo pa kami ng second round,” said the fourth-year opposite spiker. “Like last season, mas gumagalaw kami ng maayos when we're beaten, parang may hidden hugot.”

“Yeah (revenge game ito) kasi syempre natalo kami ng first round so bitbit namin ‘yun going to the game,” she added. “‘Yun ‘yung naging inspiration namin in this game. Syempre marami kaming pinagdaanan after nung game na ‘yun so ayaw namin maulit.”

The graduating setter was pumped up  seeing all her teammates wanting to win.

“Oo naman (pinaghandaan namin ang UP), kailangan talaga may hugot eh, kasi syempre meron kang motivation para gawin ang isang bagay. Siguro ‘yun din ‘yung nagpanalo sa amin ngayon,” said Fajardo, who had 23 excellent sets.

“Lahat sila, since talo kami ng first round dito sa UP, may hugot sila na kahit sinong bigyan mo ng bola nandoon ‘yung fire sa mata nila na gusto kong patayin to, babawi ako dito,” she added.

Facing a former tormentor served as an added push for Dy to win the match.

The close contest in the first set brought back what happened in their first round meeting and it reminded Dy that it must not happen again.

“Ayaw ko maulit na matalo like last round so ‘yun noong dikit (sa first set) parang mas nakaka-excite pumalo pag ganon,” she said.

“So ‘yun gusto ko rin tulungan yung team kasi baka iba mangyayari pag UP ‘yung nanalo ng set, either mada-down kami or if we win mabu-boost confidence namin kaya siguro nanalo kami ng straight sets.”

La Salle improved to 8-2 and moved a step closer to the semifinals.

The Lady Spikers have four more games remaining in the elimination round against  University of the East (1-9), University of Santo Tomas (6-4), Adamson (0-10) and Ateneo (9-1).
