UST lady spikers recover composure just in time

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas withstood a fiery De La Salle comeback from two-sets down to fashion out a 25-22, 25-13, 12-25, 21-25, 15-9, in women's volleyball action in the 75th UAAP at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.

The Tigresses fell apart in the middle sets as they wasted a two-set lead but regained their composure just in time, opening an 11-2 lead in the final set on the way to dealing the defending champions their first elimination-round loss in two years.

"Nag-lay low sila (Tigresses) at maganda naging adjustment nila (Lady Archers)," said UST coach Ogie Mamon. "Nag-adjust din ako sa fourth set pero kinapos so balik kami sa original play sa fifth set."

Judy Ann Caballejo came away with 22 points built around of 20 hits and two service aces for UST, just a day after arriving from Thailand where she saw action in the Asian University Beach Volley.

Maika Ortiz contributed 13 points, sophomore Ma. Carmela Tunay and senior Maruja Banaticla each chipped in 10 for UST, the second winningest women's volleyball team with 14 titles next to Far Eastern University's 29.

Abigail Mariano and Mika Aereen Reyes had 14 points for De La Salle while, Victorana Galang added 12.

Earlier, University of the East snapped its 24-game losing streak in the men's division as it outlasted University of the Philippines, 13-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10.
