UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas snapped its four-game skid as it survived a late fight back from University of the East, 25-19, 25-4, 23-25, 15-22, in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Pam Lastimosa had 18 points for the Tigresses, while Jessey de Leon and Mela Tunay added 13 and 12, respectively.
After breaking loose from a 16-all contest, UST almost squandered a 24-18 lead in the fourth set as UE came back strong with a 4-0 that made it 22-24.
But Alex Cabanos ended the match with a soft strike that hit the tape before dropping on the side of the Lady Warriors.
The Tigresses, who now hold a 3-5 record, however, failed to finish the game in straight sets as they became lousy the third set and gave away 15 points to UE from its errors.
"Ang problema talaga mental (toughness)," admitted UST coach Odjie Mamon. "'Yung skills at condition nandoon na, pero errors talaga ang tumatapos sa rally."
Shaya Adorador and Sarina Bulan made 12 and 11 markers each for the Lady Warriors.
The España-based spikers are at the sixth spot, their worst standing in the recent years, while UE remained winless after eight games.
