UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help kept its title retention bid alive after surviving Arellano in a tough five-setter during Friday’s semifinals of the 89th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Reigning MVP Norie Jane Diaz and league leading scorer Honey Tubino exploded for 31 and 21 points, respectively, in the Lady Altas’ 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, 29-31, 15-8 victory over the Lady Chiefs.
“It's all heart, we really want to win,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar. “We worked hard for it and nakita niyo naman ang resulta.”
The two-time reigning champion and Arellano are now tied for second place with identical 1-2 slates, behind top seeded St. Benilde, which notched its second straight win by drubbing winless San Sebastian (0-2), 25-21, 25-20, 11-25, 21-25, 16-14.
St. Benilde faces Arellano and San Sebastian meets Perpetual Help on the final day of the short one-round semifinals on Monday.
A win by the Lady Blazers in the 11:30 a.m. game will have them automatically making the Finals, leaving the Lady Chiefs waiting for the result of the second game between the Lady Altas and Lady Stags where a possible three-way tie at 1-2 could ensue among the three teams in case San Sebastian upsets Perpetual.
Quotient system will be applied in case of a three-way tie happens at second place.
But a St. Benilde loss and coupled by a Perpetual Help win over San Sebastian will forge a three-way tie on top at 2-1 among the Lady Altas, Lady Blazers, and Lady Chiefs, in which case, the teams with the highest quotient will advance to the Finals.
