A THIRD straight UAAP women’s volleyball championship for De La Salle didn’t come as a surprise for the lovely Michele Gumabao.
It was the Finals MVP plum that she didn't really expect.
The daughter of former PBA player, actor, and congressman Dennis Roldan emerged the best player of the title series which the Lady Spikers swept, 2-0, at the expense of old rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles.
She only had six points in the title clinching Game Two win, but came through for 15 points in the series opener when the Lady Spikers came back from two sets down to pull off a classic 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-6 win.
But despite being held to a single-digit score on Wednesday before a huge crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena, Gumabao was delighted with the way the Lady Spikers ended the series in three sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16.
“It was just sweet because it was a straight-set win,” she happily told Spin.ph. “Super blessing para sa amin.”
There was never any doubt in her mind, though, that the Lady Spikers were ready to end the series via sweep.
“Before coming to the MOA Arena, we conditioned our minds and we really believed na kaya na naming mag-champion,” she said.
The comely player also said the huge La Salle crowd was a big factor in the team’s success.
“It’s very rewarding na nandito ‘yung crowd. Iba talaga ang naging effect sa amin,” said Gumabao.
