SERENA WILLIAMS whipped Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 to claim Olympic singles gold medal on Saturday in Wimbledon.
The 30-year old Williams, who won her 14th Grand Slam trophy at the All England Club just a few weeks ago, finally won the singles title after making the quarterfinals in Beijing four years ago.
It was Williams’ third Olympic gold medal after winning the doubles with sister Venus in the 2000 Sydney Games and in Beijing 2008. The sisters are looking to score their third gold together after reaching the final with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova of Russia.
The 25-year-old Sharapova settled for silver in her Olympic debut, while world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus bagged the bronze with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kirilenko.
Mike and Bob Bryan of the US bagged the men’s doubles gold with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra.
