Phelps ends Olympic career with victory as US tops 400-m medley relay

MICHAEL PHELPS ended his Olympic career on a high note, winning gold with the 4x100-meter medley relay team on Saturday at the Aquatics Centre in London.

It was the 18th gold medal and 22nd of any color for the most decorated Olympian of all time.

The US clocked three minutes and 29.35 seconds, with backstroke specialist Matt Grevers leading the squad, Brendan Hansen swimming the breaststroke, Phelps in the fly and Nathan Adrian the freestyle.

Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina held the previous record for most medals with 18.

The 27-year-old Phelps won four gold and two silver medals in London.

Japan clocked 3:31.26 in winning silver, while Australia bagged the bronze in 3:31.58.

The US women’s squad set a new world record in winning the 4x100-m relay, Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt clocking 3:52.05.

Australia finished second in 3:54.02 and Japan third in 3:55.73.
