NESTOR Cordova started the day right for Team Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games when he bagged the gold in the men’s single sculls of rowing on Monday morning.
Cordova barely beat Ayung Komin of the host country for the top honors, clocking 7:49.39 to the Burmese’s 7:49.68.
Memo Memo of Indonesia bagged the bronze with a time of 8:03.61.
The gold by Cordova was the 11th for the 210-strong Philippine delegation, which remained in seventh place with still a full week of competition left before the biennial meet comes to a close.
Cordova, a Navyman from Bacolod, dedicated the win to all the victims of super-typhoon Yolanda, and to his wife Virgie and their four children.
The rowing pair of Benjie Tolentino Jr. and Edgar Ilas, however, settled for the silver medal in the men’s double sculls.
In athletics, Eric Panique won the bronze in men’s marathon, which Ying Ren Mok of Singapore topped.
The Filipino, a silver medalist in the same event two years ago in Indonesia, clocked 2:30:30.
Mok’s winning time was 2:28:36, while silver medalist was Thaung Aye of Myanmar with a time of 2:29:50.
