CYNA Rodriguez fired a four-under 68 and beat fancied Grace Lennon by four in the stroke play event of the South Australia Women’s State Amateurs on Tuesday at the Flagstaff Hill Golf Course in Adelaide.
Rodriguez struggled with her tee shots but made up for it with good recoveries and exceptional putting that netted her five birdies to top the 36-hole eliminations, bag the Vesta Cup, and secure the top seeding in the match play event set at The Grange Golf Club also in Adelaide.
The ICTSI-The Country Club player carded a 71 in the first round for a 139 total, while Lennon had a 73 for a two-day aggregate of 143.
Jayvie Agojo shot 75 and 74 and finished third at 149 to clinch the No. 3 spot in the knockout stage of the annual event.
“I putted well today. The long hours of (putting) drills and getting used to the new stroke paid off,” said Rodriguez, the former Philippine Ladies Open champion who made 23 putts in clinching the top honors. “It’s really a good feeling to have scored well, having rated my driving to be slightly below average.”
Rodriguez is looking to bounce back after losing in the quarterfinals of the Western Australia Women’s State Amateur tournament in Fremantle, Western Australia, where Agojo made the semifinals.
“Actually, I have been putting well last week but this week, it has worked really well for me,” said Rodriguez.
