VETERAN Frankie Miñoza and teen star Miguel Tabuena head the cast of shotmakers vying for top honors and the lion’s share of the P2.5M pot when the in the ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic starting on Wednesday at windy Sherwood Hills layout in Trece Martirez, Cavite.
Miñoza, winner of last year’s Japan Seniors Open, will tee off with Asian Development Tour Order of Merit topnotcher Jay Bayron and Anthony Fernando.
The 18-year-old Tabuena, winner of two legs last year in the Philippine Golf Tour, plays with Mhark Fernando and Japanese qualifier Toru Nakajima.
Minoza, coming off a playoff victory over Bayron brothers Rufino and Jay, in The Country Club Invitational last month, hopes to dish out the same form as he leads the chase for the top prize of P450,000 in the tournament kicking off this year’s ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour.
Rufino Bayron opens his bid against Raul Minoza and Edward Reyes in the opener of the circuit sponsored by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. and organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.
Asian Tour campaigner Mars Pucay is also tipped to contend along with Cassius Casas, Marvin Dumandan, Ferdie Aunzo, Jun Bernis, Jhonnel Ababa, Charles Hong, Zanie Boy Gialon and former Philippine Open winner Gerald Rosales in the tournament backed by Sharp, Nike Golf, Callaway, Titleist, Custom Clubmakers, Mizuno, Cleveland Golf, Foot Joy, Event Captain, Inc., Omnisource Inti’l. TPGAP and media partners Balls, A Round of Golf, Inquirer Golf, Studio 23 and Pinoygolfer.com.
Focus will also be on Dutchman Guido Van der Valk, the qualifying school topnotcher at Splendido, who will start the tournament with Carl Santos-Ocampo and the power-hitting Rey Pagunsan.
Custom Clubmakers is also putting up P50,000 for the “Custom Clubmakers Player of the Year,” the pro with the most number of wins after the 17-leg season.
The Solaire Open at Wack Wack from April 11 to 14 is the second leg of the PGT Tour and the seventh leg of this year’s Asian Tour.
